- Drumming Experience Day for Children with ADHD: Unlocking New Possibilities Through Percussion
Before 1 PM, our partner, the Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra, began moving various percussion instruments of all sizes into the rehearsal room at the Weiwuying Arts and Cultural Center. Volunteers from Radiant Education Foundation also started setting up the activity space. This was my first time stepping into a band rehearsal room, and the large space felt like a mini concert hall, giving us the chance to experience a percussion extravaganza in this smaller, yet grand setting.
The event kicked off with a series of musical compositions and rhythm activities from the Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra, featuring familiar tunes such as Super Mario, Detective Conan, and YOASOBI, among others. After the opening, the children proceeded in an orderly manner to their designated groups and took part in four exciting challenge activities, each led by an instructor from the orchestra.
[I Can Do MI-RE-DO]: Using pitch pipes or handbells, this activity combines visual, auditory, and physical elements to help children recognize musical pitches.
[Little Drum Circles]: Using hand-played instruments like the cymbal drum, children learn to perceive and coordinate rhythm.
[Telling Stories with Instruments]: By playing natural percussion instruments such as thunder tubes, children are encouraged to express their creativity and storytelling abilities.
[Rhythm Instrument Play]: Various rhythm instruments made from different materials are used, allowing children to experience a mini ensemble performance. Through teamwork, they enhance their collaborative skills.
Each activity was carefully designed through collaboration between the Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra and the Radiant Education Foundation, with the goal of catering to the specific needs of these special children. We hope that through these tailor-made activities, the children will unlock more possibilities and explore new potential.
