- The 6th Taiwan Science Festival 2025 Opens with Great Fanfare 【TSSD NEWS】
Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), and jointly organized by Taiwan’s five major science museums, the 2025 Sixth Taiwan Science Festival opens this year under the inspiring theme “Inspire Minds, Empower the Future.” The festival features a wide variety of science education activities designed to engage the public in exploring scientific wonders, experiencing innovation, and enjoying the perfect blend of knowledge and fun. The National Science and Technology Museum (NSTM) in Kaohsiung will hold its series of festival events on November 8–9 and November 15–16.
The NSTM announced today (Nov. 9) that among the highlights of its program is the “Grand Science Drama,” presented in collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Government’s Economic Development Bureau. Centered on the theme of environmental sustainability, the museum has invited the Paper Windmill Theatre to perform “Polly’s Journey Home: The Story of Tung Blossom Island” on the evenings of November 8 and 9 at the South Wing’s Multi-Function Plaza. The story follows the encounter between drought-stricken Tung Blossom Island and Polly, the youngest member of the Typhoon Family, sparking a series of magical changes. With its vivid storytelling and stunning stage effects, the production combines education with entertainment, making it a delightful show for audiences of all ages—and a spectacular opening act for this year’s Science Festival.
The Science Performance Stage also offers a diverse lineup of programs, including captivating science demonstrations, in-depth talks, and hands-on activities. Highlights include the demonstration “Where Does the Wind Come From?” revealing the mysteries of air pressure; storytelling sessions “Come and Play” and “That Moonlit Night”, co-organized with the Radiant Education Foundation, guiding children and families to explore lagoon ecology and deep-sea fisheries while discovering Kaohsiung’s rich marine culture. Other features include the short play “Can I Join the Party?” co-produced with the Garden of Hope Foundation (Kaohsiung Branch) and the Kaohsiung Good Deeds Co-Living Promotion Association, as well as discussion sessions in partnership with PTS Kids based on its programs “After School Flower Road” and “Expedition to the Arctic.” These talks take audiences to Longyearbyen, a hub for Arctic climate research, where producer Zhu Xiao-Quan and young explorer Tseng Hai-Yen will share firsthand insights and unforgettable discoveries. All performances will take place in the North Wing lobby, promising a feast of science and creativity.
The festival’s theme markets are another major highlight. During the first week, the Science Market and Maker Party will be held simultaneously on the fourth floor, the B1 corridor, and the outdoor Equality Avenue, featuring over 50 booths that showcase cutting-edge technology and maker innovations. The second week shifts focus to food and agricultural education, with the “2025 Sustainable Rural Food and Agriculture Showcase” jointly organized with the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation, Ministry of Agriculture. Events include the “Top 20 Creative Teaching Aids for Food and Agricultural Education 2025” market, the Good Food Educators Association’s forum “Growing with Farmers: Shared Stories of Food, Agriculture, and ESG,” and Heyun Agri-Education Co., Ltd.’s “Food and Agriculture Education Managers’ Networking Event.” Meanwhile, the Ocean Education Carnival will be held at B1, and the outdoor Equality Avenue will host the Farmers’ Market in collaboration with the Kaohsiung City Agriculture Bureau, showcasing the interconnection between agriculture, forestry, fisheries, livestock industries, and environmental sustainability. The Kaohsiung Public Library and the San Fa Education Foundation will also join with their mobile bookmobiles, adding a strong cultural touch to the marketplace.
In addition, NSTM’s newly created “Chill Maker” Creative Zone will offer a series of maker workshops during the festival. Participants can design and build projects such as aroma steam trains, powered robots, hand-cranked alarms, sand art candles, and eco-friendly cup sleeves—combining creativity with hands-on science learning. Corporate partners will also present fun interactive activities, including HIWIN Technologies Corp.’s “Rolling Balls!” and “Treasure Hunt” experiences, and Mechi Enterprise Co., Ltd.’s “Weaving the Fabric of Science” DIY workshop—seamlessly merging science with daily life.
During the festival, several science partners and exhibition bases will host special events in collaboration. Highlights include the Chunghwa Telecom Academy’s 5G Application Zone, featuring a visit from Wulai Elementary and Junior High School to explore 5G innovations with Indigenous cultural elements; the Metal Industries Research and Development Centre (MIRDC) donating hydrogen energy exhibits to the NSTM’s “Next Power: Hydrogen Station” special exhibition; the Southern Region Weather Center hosting “Fun with Meteorology” workshops; and the CPC Petroleum Discovery Center presenting “Green Energy Duo: Hydrogen & Geothermal Adventures!”—all designed to make science learning lively and engaging.
To encourage full participation, the museum has also planned the “Stamp Challenge Adventure” and “Triple Gift Rewards” events, allowing visitors to earn prizes while enjoying the wonders of science. As one of NSTM’s most iconic science outreach programs, the Taiwan Science Festival aims to spark scientific curiosity and literacy across all ages—illuminating the path toward a brighter, knowledge-driven future. This annual celebration invites everyone to discover the joy of science together!
