The Radiant Education Foundation, established by Radiant Opto-Electronics Corporation, is based in the vibrant port city of Kaohsiung. Rooted in its long-standing commitment to environmental education, the foundation approaches its mission from multiple perspectives aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From 2024 to 2026, the foundation is launching a three-part marine education picture book series centered on the themes of “Lagoons, Harbors, and Ocean Currents.” This annual publication project — one book per year — seeks to engage the public through storytelling and visual art, revealing the intricate web of life that connects Taiwan to its surrounding marine ecosystems.
Published in July 2025, the second picture book in the series, That Full Moon Night, is a collaborative work between illustrator Hsu Fang-Ju and writer Hsieh Ming-Fang, created in partnership with local independent bookstore Forever young Fans & Books in Kaohsiung.Inspired by a whimsical escape adventure of small animals from the ShouShan Zoo, the story follows their moonlit journey through the Kaohsiung harbor, ultimately leading them to Qianzhen Fishing Port—Taiwan’s largest deep-sea fishing port. With lively storytelling and richly detailed illustrations, the book invites readers to experience the cultural and human aspects of harbor life. Subtle narrative clues and hidden visual details are cleverly woven throughout the pages, sparking curiosity in children and adults alike. The story not only fosters a love of reading but also gently introduces the deep connections between marine resources and food culture.
To allow more people to experience the charm of the creation firsthand, the Radiant Education Foundation will host a three-month original illustration exhibition of That Full Moon Night by illustrator Hsu Fang-Ju, titled "An Animal’s Adventure in the Harbor," from September 20 to December 28 at the Lee Ko-Yung Memorial Library. The exhibition will showcase the artist’s detailed hand-drawn scenes, inviting visitors to step into the world of the picture book and immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of the harbor and the rich marine culture depicted through the illustrations. The foundation hopes that through this exhibition, a dialogue between art and the public will be sparked, conveying the core values of sustainable education in a more accessible and engaging way.In addition, the foundation will simultaneously launch the “Radiant Little Droplets Story Volunteer” training program, inviting community members to participate in learning storytelling and service. This initiative aims to transform the spirit conveyed in the picture book into relatable, everyday sharing.Through the efforts of these story volunteers, the foundation aspires to sow seeds in various communities, allowing marine education to spread like tiny droplets—continuously expanding and taking root at the local level.
Marine sustainability has always been more than just an environmental issue—it is deeply intertwined with culture, daily life, and education. Through the combined efforts of picture book publishing, original illustration exhibitions, and volunteer training programs, the Radiant Education Foundation aims to transform the emotional impact of reading into sustainable action. The goal is to help more people understand and cherish the ocean’s value, working together to protect this blue sea that nurtures both the city and its culture.
