- More than 9,000 school children participated in the Kaohsiung City Cultural Bureau’s 113-year performing arts experience education program to extend the new life of traditional opera 【Media Today】
The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government has launched an art education experience program for the 16th year, and it will be launched from October to November this year (113)! It is hoped that through the two-way model of "theatre troupes entering schools" and "school children entering theaters", more than 80 elementary schools and 9,000 students will participate enthusiastically, making traditional opera not far away and everyone can become a little theater fan. Many students from remote areas enjoyed the performance up close for the first time, cheering loudly along with the plot. The actors who participated were deeply moved by their sincere emotions.
Wang Wencui, director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Kaohsiung City Government, said that although Kaohsiung City is vast, he hopes that all children in Kaohsiung will have the opportunity to go to the theater to watch a play. To this end, the city government used 250 transportation vehicles from the school to the hall to take practical actions to resolve the issue of uneven distribution of geographical location and artistic resources. Wang Wencui hopes that children can experience the fun of traditional opera through actual viewing experience and further understand Taiwan's traditional art and culture.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that this year’s educational experience program takes traditional opera as the theme, and plans four different types of traditional opera performances, including Gezi Opera, shadow puppet show, puppet show, and puppet show. Among them, 16 opera performances were staged by "Kit Kat Theater Company" for school children at the Okayama Cultural Center; 7 shadow puppet theater performances were performed by "Yongxingle Shadow Puppet Theater Company" and "Xiangzao Theater" at Taitung Arts and Culture The center presents the cross-border stage play "Monkey!" It’s you”. At the same time, the theater education program is connected and integrated with the Ministry of Culture's "Out-of-school Cultural Experience Program - Performing Arts Route" program. In addition to enjoying the performances, they also visit central and local art centers, including the National Center for Traditional Arts Kaohsiung Campus - Taiwan Gezi Opera Center, Weiwuying National Art and Culture Center, National Museum of Taiwan History, Kaohsiung Pop Music Center, and Kaohsiung City Shadow Puppet Theater, bringing students a fruitful one-day artistic and cultural feast.
The educational promotion center that enters the campus invites Jin Feifeng Puppet Theater Troupe, Tianhongyuan Palm Theater Company, New World Palm Theater Company and Golden Eagle TV Puppet Theater Company to proactively perform in 12 schools, 9 of which are remote, non-mountainous and African schools. City schools hope to bring resources into areas that are not easily accessible to arts and cultural activities, implement equal rights in the arts, and eliminate the gap in arts resources between urban and rural areas in Kaohsiung City.
Huang Junjie, the principal of Mingzong Elementary School in Hunei District, who participated in both the theater education field and the campus education promotion field this year, believes that "personal experience is the best learning." Whether it is entering the theater to watch a performance or a theater troupe bringing a performance to campus, it is very exciting. Students have a deeper understanding of traditional opera; when knowledge is no longer limited to textbooks, but can be connected with actual life experiences, the memories generated will be more profound.
The Cultural Affairs Bureau added that in order to attract the interest of schoolchildren and keep close to contemporary current affairs, the Gezi Opera performance integrates the identification of news issues and "false information" into the plot, while the shadow puppet performance is presented in the form of a play within a play, and the traditional Sun Wukong and Lantern Monkey characters are given to the new generation. Idol; every effort is made to let children not only appreciate the beauty of art and literature, but also achieve the effect of entertaining and educating through drama performances. Actions to reduce geographical restrictions and implement equal rights in the arts require more public support and recognition. We would also like to thank our local corporate partners in Kaohsiung "ASE Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd." and "Radiant Education Foundation" for jointly spreading the seeds of art. Take root and thrive.
